Body, Mind, and Spirit: Why I Invite The Great Physician Into Every Healing Journey

Learn why normal is not the same as well-and what a deeper interpretation may reveal.

If you’ve ever sat in a paper gown hearing the words “everything looks normal” while your body was quietly screaming otherwise, this post is for you. I’ve been on that exam table. I know the strange mix of relief and despair — relief that nothing is “wrong,” despair because something clearly is.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me years earlier: normal is not the same as well. And the gap between those two words is where most chronic symptoms live.

Where “normal” comes from

Conventional lab ranges are built from population statistics — essentially, the spread of results from the people who get tested. But think about who gets blood drawn: mostly people who already don’t feel well. A “normal” range drawn from a tired, stressed, inflamed population is a low bar. Falling inside it means one thing: you’re not sick enough to diagnose. It does not mean your body is thriving.

That’s why you can be told your thyroid is “fine” while you’re gaining weight, losing hair, and sleeping ten hours a night. You can be “fine” and still be far from well.

Optimal ranges ask a better question

Functional health flips the question. Instead of “Are you sick enough to treat?” we ask, “Are you truly well — and if not, why not?” Optimal ranges are the narrower windows where the body actually functions at its best. When I review labs with clients, we look at where each marker sits within that tighter window, and — just as important — how the markers relate to each other. Patterns tell stories single numbers can’t.

What standard panels often never look at

Beyond reading ranges differently, functional testing simply looks in places an annual physical rarely goes:

  • Your cortisol rhythm — not one snapshot, but how your stress hormone rises and falls across the day. A flattened or inverted curve explains a lot of “wired at night, dead in the morning.”
  • Your gut — digestion, absorption, inflammation, and the microbial balance that influences everything from immunity to mood.
  • Hormone patterns — how your hormones are produced, used, and cleared, not just whether one level clears a diagnostic floor.
  • Toxic burden and inflammation — the slow, silent drains on energy and clarity.
  • Energy production — whether your cells have what they need to make the energy your life requires.

Your symptoms were never “nothing”

Symptoms are not random malfunctions to silence. They’re messages — your body’s way of asking for help with something specific. Fatigue, bloating, brain fog, stubborn weight: each one points somewhere. The work I do at Discovery Functional Health is, at its heart, translation. We gather the right data, read it against optimal standards, and finally let your body finish its sentence.

I believe you were created for more than “getting through the day.” And I believe answers exist — sometimes they’ve simply never been looked for.

Ready to bring your health to light?

If you’re done hearing “normal” and ready to hear the truth, let’s talk. Bring your old labs — I’d love to show you what a second, deeper look can reveal.
